How to use the Headway Themes Content Leaf for Static Websites

The next posts on HeadwayHub will discuss how to make a static (“normal”) website using the headway premium wordpress theme. In this first tutorial, let’s talk about using the content leaf more efficiently, shall we?

How to Use the Content Leaf on a Static Homepage

Note that pages have content leafs – content that draws from whatever you put in the wordpress back-end for that page. When creating a static site, I recommend keeping the default content leaf in tact. If you need to change your homepage copy, you’ll find it easier to use the wordpress editor than simple HTML coding.

I personally recommend that you use the default content leaf for the longest/most important content block. That will make your overall editing easier and changes can be made more quickly.

Using Additional Content Leafs for Easy Page Editing

Content leafs have the ability to pull content from other pages. So it stands to reason that if you really, really hate HTML coding, you can create “snippet” pages for your homepage content. These can be used for a variety of things – link lists, services lists, “about the company”, etc.

How to Create a “Snippet” Page

To use a “snippet page,” create a new page and name it after the content it contains. For example, “list of services.” Once that’s done, scroll down to the SEO options for that page and select no-index. (You don’t want google or visitors crawling snippet pages). While you’re at it, hide that page from the navigation menu.

Adding the Snippet to Your Website

Once you’ve got your snippet page created, go into the visual editor and add a new content leaf to your homepage. Click the pencil icon to edit that page, and use the “fetch content from page” option to grab your snippet. Save and reload and then fit the content into the page as appropriate.

Using a Snippet Page – Guidelines

  1. No-index these pages. You don’t want people stumbling upon a snippet.
  2. Make them child-pages of your parent template.
  3. Hide snippet pages from the navigation menu so people don’t stumble upon them.
  4. Only use snippet pages for content that needs to be regularly tweaked, exceeds a certain length.

Hello Corey, do you have a tutorial on how to duplicate an HTML/PHP leaf from a certain page to the other page? I want to copy the exact content of that leaf to my other page.

Please help me.

Hey Corey - Thanks for the tip! I don't currently use Headway but I'd like to switch but I, like you, also use DAP on my site. I've heard there are problems with using DAP with Headway Leafs. Have you had any such problems? Thank you.

I've had no problems with DAP so far.

Thank you for your response, I appreciate your time and consideration. If you could help me clear up one final area of confusion, I would greatly appreciate it. When I asked if there were any known problems between DAP and Headway, Clay from Headway wrote "since DAP really just interacts with the content section, it'll only interact with the content leaf of Headway and all of the other leafs remain untouched. Unless you can force a page to show the WordPress login if someone isn't logged in, I don't think it'd work."
Do you use DAP with Headway leafs or have you somehow found a solution to this situation? Thanks again.

I don't use other leafs on my membership pages. Not because of DAP but just because I don't really have a need to.

This is a great tip, Corey! The snippet pages will make it easier for my clients to maintain their own sites :-)
